Editorial Cartoons

DRAWING

Back in my high school and college days, I volunteered to create editorial cartoons for the school newspapers. These were fun challenges for my growing artistic talent. Most of these cartoons are created with nibbed pens and India ink on bristol paper. Otherwise, they are created with permanent marker.

Editorial Cartoon: California Prop 215

Legality of medical cannabis in California, eventually passed by Proposition 215

California Proposition 215 (also known as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996) was a landmark ballot measure that legalized the use of medical marijuana in California. It allowed qualifying patients and their caregivers to possess and cultivate marijuana for medical purposes, provided they had a doctor’s recommendation.

When I created this cartoon, Prop 215 had yet to pass. This cartoon comically shows a patient being “cut off” from cannabis-based medicine, and being arrested at a time when cannabis was still being considered illegal.

Editorial Cartoon: OCC Finals

Stress during college finals

Who hasn’t experienced the stress of procrastination? This cartoon is a humorous look at a young person being bothered by a classmate the wee hours of the morning, who is studying for her final exams which are in several hours.

Editorial Cartoon: ASOCC Annual Officers' Retreat

Where is the money going?

This cartoon is an amusing look at what a school’s Associated Student Body does with the funds that are allocated for various student organizations, events, and programs.

Editorial Cartoon: Toasting to the Holiday Spirit

Yeah, this is a little dark

I don’t think this was ever used in a paper publication. It may have been an idea I’ve had in mind for an article about students feeling in a low mood during a holiday season.

Editorial Cartoon: Long Beach Poly High Life

"You need an I.D. for that..."

In high school, I remember a growing discussion about a stricter requirement to have your student identification on hand to receive services. This cartoon comically suggests that you even needed it to graduate!
